Empress Menen

On November 2, 1930, when H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I ascended the throne of Ethiopia as King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God, and True Light of this World, he was not alone. Empress Menen was at his right hand, and was crowned Queen of Queens shortly after. This was the first time in history that a King and Queen were crowned at the same time.

When Emperor Haile Selassie I ordered that his Queen be crowned at the same time as himself, he broke with centuries-old traditions and set a new precedent for how women were to be viewed in Ethiopia and throughout the African Diaspora. Empress Menen and Emperor Haile Selassie I are both of the King Solomon and Queen of Sheba lineage. Their coronations were seen by Rastafari igregation as a fulfillment of prophecy, and are exalted as King Alpha and Queen Omega, the beginning without an end. Ghanaian women received some 2.4 million euro in so-called micro-credit during 2003 to enable them to finance improve-ments in food production, and start small businesses or trade.

It was the Accra government that started the Women's Development Fund (WDF), in Dec. 2001, as common banks do not give credit to women without property. A network of rural banks, all over the country, is in charge of disbursing the Fund's capital.

Gladys Asmah, Ghana's Minister for Women and Children's Affairs, stated that the program has been a success and that studies for 2002 show that most of those receiving micro-finance were involved in sub-sistence food production, as 60 % of food crop farmers in Ghana are women. Other beneficiaries were involved in food crop processing, fish processing, merchandise and food distribution.

The women interested in applying for the credit formed work groups, opened joint bank accounts and, once approved, split the funds amongst themselves.
